about

Words & Music by Kira Small (Gerry Bruce Music ASCAP)

ABOUT THE SONG: Years ago in Austin I sat down to write a sad country song....but my inner smart-ass took over and this came out instead. This was my first experience in ignoring my inner critic saying "oh I can't say THAT..." I have learned to welcome and trust that feeling too...the ignoring one, that is.

ABOUT THE TRACK: The track we cut on this during the original sessions in Austin just didn't feel right. Bruce Dees had the brilliant idea to cut this live - ALL IN ONE ROOM - and he brought in the perfect guys to pull it off. I don't know when I've had more fun in the studio.

lyrics

Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep
If you come back before I wake, it better be a good excuse you make
'Cause I’ve been crying all night long over what might have gone wrong
Sitting by my telephone, waiting for it to tell me why you’re not home

You better come back with a real good story why you left me here all alone
'Cause I’ve been sitting here worrying, making up stories of my own
You better be close to dead
‘Cause you’re gonna wish you were, honey, if I hear instead:

“Baby I’m sorry I made you worry - I guess I forgot to call
Me and the boys got to carrying on and I didn’t even notice that clock on the wall
I’m pretty sure I told you when I made you my wife
You wouldn’t be living no perfect life
Now if you'll just put down that kitchen knife
I’ll make it up to you somehow.”

You leave me here to contemplate the reason you’re two hours late
I wouldn’t have to think the worst if you’d’a just had the sense to call me first
Next to me you’re pleased to be ‘cause I don’t get mad easily
But when this one mistake you make I’m bound to leave utensils in my wake

You know you’ll always be my one and only, no other love I’ll find
And if anything bad ever happened to you I’d probably lose my mind
I really hope you’re OK
‘Cause you’re gonna need you strength, son, if you come home and say:

“Baby I’m sorry I made you worry - I guess I forgot to call
Me and the boys got to carrying on and I didn’t even notice that clock on the wall
I’m pretty sure I told you when I made you my wife
You wouldn’t be living no perfect life
Now if you'll just put down that kitchen knife
I’ll make it up to you somehow.”
